Our Sangha

Two Arrows Zen Sangha

The Three Treasures of our practice are The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. The Two Arrows Zen Sangha is the story of two teachers, two bodies of students, and two approaches to Zen study and practice, joined as one Heart-Mind devoted to practice-realization as taught by Zen Master Dogen and innumerable ancestors.

Diane Musho Hamilton Roshi’s training has roots in Tibetan Buddhism from her study at Naropa University with Chogyam Trungpa, and Zen practice as transmitted to her by Dennis Genpo Merzel Roshi and sealed by Sidney Musai Walter Roshi. Her practice is deeply informed by the Integral Theory of American philosopher and pandit Ken Wilber. She considers a basic orientation to the Integral approach a key foundation and prerequisite for study with her. Musho Roshi uses many contemporary upayas (skillful means) such as voice dialog – Big Mind Big Heart, training in communication and relational skills, and focused small-group inquiry in her teaching.

Two Arrows Zen members who have received Jukai from Musho Roshi are called the Dragon Heart Sangha.

Michael Mugaku Zimmerman Roshi also received transmission from Genpo Roshi and the final seal of Inka from Musai Roshi. His teaching often taps into the scientific study of neurobiology and psychology of mindfulness and meditation. He has cultivated a scholar’s knowledge of the history of Buddhism, especially the foundation of Zen in the West as established by Japanese Zen masters. And like Musho Roshi he is profoundly committed to awakening his students through teaching and example.

Two Arrows Zen members who have received Jukai from Mugaku Roshi are known as the Steelyard Sangha.

Together as the Two Arrows Zen Sangha, Dragon Heart and Steelyard Sangha practitioners are a worldwide community of practice located in the United States, Canada, Europe and South America. They sit zazen in Salt Lake City and Torrey, Utah, and online in Virtual Zendos in three time zones. They come to talks and programs at Artspace Zendo in Salt Lake City, and travel to the Torrey Zendo for Sesshins and an extended practice period (Ango) in the summer. Many also participate in online Zen Study and Practice offered throughout the year by both Musho and Mugaku Roshi.

We invite you to explore this website to get to know Two Arrows Zen, and to join in the public programming in Salt Lake City, Torrey, and online to connect with the Two Arrows Zen Sangha.
