We live in difficult, transitional times. Our situation is often unpredictable, and so are our emotional states. It is helpful at this time to deepen our meditation practice, and learn techniques to stabilize our emotional states.
Love and Compassion: Working with Disturbing Emotions is the second online course in the Love and Compassion series, led by Diane Musho Hamilton and Caty Hartung. The course will engage Zen Buddhist and Tibetan teachings and practices for working with one’s emotions, as well as opening one’s heart. They will use contemporary insights such as understanding how our brain and nervous system works, as well as traditional methods like the use of breath to support an aware state of mind.
This is program of study for 9 weeks (January 22nd -19th of March), examining the truth of impermanence, creating proper conditions for meditation and learning how to open up to the constant change we are facing. We will look into the nature of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and anger, and learn how to work with them. We will enlarge our capacity for kindness, using Buddhist practices of sitting meditation like shine (calming the mind), tonglen (giving and receiving), and Loving-Eyes (mantra meditation) and experience the mind itself (Big Mind). Finally, we will explore the hidden emotions and work with shadow practice.
If now is the time for you to go deeper in a culture of like-minded practitioners who wish to understand the challenges that we are all facing, please join us.
This online course will be easeful and accessible. You don’t have to be a Buddhist to benefit from this course.

Diane began her studies at Naropa University in 1983 with Choygam Trungpa Rinpoche, and became a Zen student of Genpo Dennis Merzel Roshi in 1997. In 2003, she received ordination as a Zen monk and received dharma transmission in 2006. Diane facilitates Big Mind Big Heart, a process developed by Genpo Roshi to help elicit the insights of Zen in Western audiences. She has worked with Ken Wilber and the Integral Institute since 2004.
She is the Executive Director of Two Arrows Zen, a practice in Utah, and offers training programs oriented to personal development and advanced facilitator skills.
Diane is the author of Everything Is Workable and The Zen of You and Me. Her newest book, Compassionate Conversations: How to Speak and Listen from the Heart is co-authored with Gabriel Menegale Wilson and Kimberly Myosai Loh (Shambhala, July 2020).
CATY HARTUNG is an Integral Buddhist coach drawing from a unique 35-year background in Buddhism and her rich life experience as a cosmopolitan. Born in Germany, she began her university studies of French, pedagogy, and physical education in 1984, at the same time when her curiosity grew for Buddhist meditation.
In 1991, Caty’s Buddhist teacher, Lama Ole Nydahl, asked her to help him, while traveling together around the world. She soon took a leading role in developing his international network, known as Diamond Way Buddhism. In the 25 years of their intense cooperation, the organization grew to over six hundred meditation centers.
She has trained as an Integral Facilitator with Diane Musho Hamilton and is also certified as an Integral Coach by Integral Coaching Canada.
Today, Caty accompanies leaders in their conscious change process and human development and helps organizations to grow and implement their vision. She continues her meditation practice under the guidance of the 17th Karmapa, Trinley Thaye Dorje.
