It’s been said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the whole world has gone into retreat, and much as during a Zen sesshin, this time has allowed unique questions and thoughts to arise and develop both on the cushion and off.

In this weekly series, Michael Mugaku Zimmerman Roshi will focus on the questions that arise for each of us in regular Zen practice during these extraordinary times. We invite you to pay close attention to these questions as they arise, and make note of them in order to guide our weekly discussion. Ask a Roshi Form

To finish out 2020, this Zen teaching is live via Zoom in a series of 14 sessions on Tuesday evenings, at 6:30 – 7:45 pm MT September 1 – October 20, and November 10 – December 15, 2020. Calls are recorded and will be made available for download to those who have registered for the program.

Mugaku will also lead discussion based on selected chapters from the book: Introduction to Zen Koans: Learning the Language of Dragons by James Ishmael Ford.

An indispensable guide to koans, teaching the reader about the importance of lineage, the practice of “just sitting,” and koan practice as paths to awakening.

“This marvelous book opens the treasure house of Zen and yet, happily, does not dispel its mystery. James Ford, an excellent storyteller and longtime Zen practitioner, presents a detailed and beautiful description of the craft of zazen, including “just sitting” and various forms of breath meditation—but focuses primarily on koan introspection.” —from the foreword by Joan Halifax.
