A 3-Part Telecourse with Terry Patten
Hosted by Diane Musho Hamilton Roshi
Summer Session of the Zen Study & Practice Series, 2019
Saturdays, July 13, 20, & 27
9:00 – 10:15 am MT via the Zoom Conference Platform

In A New Republic of the Heart, Terry Patten addresses our global meta-crisis in all its aspects—environmental, economic, political, cultural, and spiritual — from a breathtakingly all-encompassing perspective. The book frames our global and societal crises and opportunities as challenges and opportunities for us, now, personally — in terms that penetrate our habitual abstractions and avoidance.

As we more fully recognize the horrific facts of our ecological and climate predicament, we are experiencing a new type of trauma — one we must name and understand if we are to thrive. But it is not just a matter of emotional management — our childrens’ and grandchildrens’ future and the future of our life-support system depend on what happens across the next years. This asks us to act, and on a new basis. It implicates the evolving quality, intelligence, tenderness, courage, and cut-through-the-bs immediacy of our ways of being now.

In this short course Terry will guide us through reading selected chapters of his book, introducing the difficult, necessary, creative, and ultimately inspiring and rewarding work through which we can meaningfully address our most “wicked” problems. He will invite us to engage a series of “conversations that matter” that will transform us, even as they advance our understanding of how the Inner Work, Interpersonal Work and Outer Work are advancing toward integration as whole systems transformation — and a whole new level of human maturity. We will make contact with our paradoxical potential for heroic goodness, as we even more deeply meet and befriend one another — and practice together, co-creating a higher level of the “we-space” in our communities of practice.

The text for this telecourse is A New Republic of the Heart: An Ethos For Revolutionaries, A Guide to Inner Work for Holistic Change.  It is available in the TAZ READING LIST, at all online booksellers, and in the Two Arrows Zen store at Artspace Zendo.

July 13: Our Wicked Predicament, the Consensus Trance, and the Possible Human
Terry will introduce the paradoxical practice of being deeply simultaneously present to (1) the most sobering and disturbing global facts (and being present to them means not being traumatically frozen), and (2) the inspiring gift and joyous opportunity we are granted by this wonderful, mad, apocalyptic moment of the human journey. For this first session, you are invited to read the Introduction and Part I (or at least the Introduction and Chapters 1 & 2) of A New Republic of the Heart.

July 20: Being the Change
Terry will transmit a felt apprehension of the personal and collective practice made necessary and possible by this unprecedented evolutionary moment. He will help us to explore the opportunities for friendship   implicit in becoming the kind of brother-sisterhood pointed to by Thich Nhat Hanh’s famous suggestion that “the next Buddha will be a sangha”.  For this session, you are invited to read Chapters 6, 7, 8 & 9 (read at least 7 & 9, and browse 6 & 8) of A New Republic of the Heart.

July 27: Conversations that Matter
Terry will discuss a few of the elusively hard-to-have human conversations that are now made necessary by our collective predicament. And he will invite you to do action-research into the art of initiating them in the laboratory of your own life and relationships. For this session, you are invited to read Chapters 10 & 11 (at least 11) of A New Republic of the Heart.

Three live 75-minute calls, access to streaming video,
plus edited mp3 recordings.

About Terry Patten

TERRY PATTEN speaks and consults internationally as a community organizer, philosopher, and teacher. Over the last fifteen years he has devoted his efforts to the integral project of evolving consciousness through practice, and facing, examining, and healing our global crisis through the marriage of spirit and activism.

With Ken Wilber and a core team at the Integral Institute, Patten co-wrote Integral Life Practice, which distills ancient and modern practices into a contemporary transformational lifestyle. As creator and host of the online series Beyond Awakening, he has explored the big questions of our time with some of our most prominent and dynamic thought leaders. Terry has been a long-time collaborator with Diane Musho Hamilton at the Integral Institute. Diane, Terry, and Jeff Salzman created the Integral Living Room at The Integral Center in Boulder, Colorado, which were experiential intensives designed to support and sustain “the best conversations of our lives.”

He founded and leads Bay Area Integral, which gathers and supports an integral community in the San Francisco Bay Area; he led a team at the HeartMath Institute that developed their first heart-rate variability monitor; and he founded the catalog company Tools For Exploration, which defined the field of consciousness technologies.

Patten is also a social entrepreneur involved in supporting restorative redwood forestry, innovating new technological alternatives to fossil fuels, and creating new currencies for a sustainable economy.

Terry is the author of A New Republic of the Heart: An Ethos For Revolutionaries, A Guide to Inner Work for Holistic Change (North Atlantic Books, 2018).
